Warriors defeat Petrels to open SAA tourney

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Oglethorpe baseball team suffered an 11-3 defeat to Hendrix Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the 2022 Southern Athletic Association tournament. The loss saw the Stormy Petrels drop to 19-20 on the season and moved them into the elimination side of the Birmingham Southern pod.

Carson Weir, Mason Pearcy and Shota Barbeau all tallied multiple hits in the loss, but Hendrix jumped out to a big early lead and the Petrels were never able to battle back. Weir, Barbeau and Andrew Noack all drove in runs in the fourth inning to cut into the Warrior lead, but the Petrels left the bases loaded that inning trailing 8-3.

That theme disappointingly continued as Oglethorpe left multiple runners on in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Weir and Pearcy singled and doubled, respectively, to start the sixth; Harrison Hall and Will Arnold walked and singled to start the seventh; and Pearcy and Barbeau both singled to start the eighth. However, all six runners would be stranded as part of a count of nine runners left on base in the loss.

Game Notes

  • With the result, Hendrix evened the season series after Oglethorpe took two out of three in the regular-season series
  • Carter Guarino increased his hitting streak to nine games and his reached base streak to 18 games
  • Arnold reached base for the 20th straight game
  • This was Pearcy's 13th multihit game of his freshman season; Weir tallied his 11th

Up Next

Oglethorpe plays an elimination game against the loser of No. 3 Birmingham Southern and Sewanee. Birmingham Southern is the No. 1 seed and pod host while Sewanee is the No. 8 seed. The game is set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. eastern time.

If the Petrels win that game, they would face either Hendrix or the BSC/Sewanee winner Friday at 7:15 p.m. ET. Two wins on Friday would put Oglethorpe into championship Saturday, where the Petrels would need to defeat the remaining seed twice in order to advance to the final stage of the SAA tournament.
