Petrels kick off season with win at Agnes Scott

DECATUR, GA. - In the first game of the season Thursday evening, the Stormy Petrels defeated Agnes Scott 6-1 to usher in a new era of Oglethorpe women's soccer.

Sophomore Mackenzie Jones scored the first goal of the game just over eight minutes in. Devyn Canty scored the second goal for the Petrels immediately after Jones, then scored again late in the first period on the way to what would be a hat trick for the senior.

Sophomore Jade Anderson quickly scored for the Petrels in the beginning of the second period before the Scotties were able to make their first and only goal soon after. Oglethorpe continued to take shots and fight off Agnes Scott until freshman Harlow Cregar made the fifth goal for the Petrels. Ten minutes later, Canty scored the sixth and final goal of the game with the assist from Taylor Whiteside.

"I was very pleased with the performance today," said Head Coach Rob King. "It was hot and the field was slow, but we kept the energy level high and played our brand of soccer. Devyn led the scoring with her first ever hat-trick but it was a terrific team effort. We'll have a recovery session tomorrow, work on our set pieces and be ready for our home opener on Saturday night."

Canty's three-goal effort led the offense while goalkeeper Haley Lowell led the defense, making four saves out of Agnes Scott's five shots.

Game Notes:
  • The win marked the first at Oglethorpe for first-year Oglethorpe head coach Rob King.
