Volleyball leaves Berry National Invitational 2-1

ROME, Ga.— The Story Petrels went 1-1 on the day with a win over Averett University and a loss to Ohio Northern University to wrap up their play in the Berry National Invitational.  Oglethorpe defeated the Cougars of Averett three sets to one, and lost to the Polar Bears three sets to none.

Averett University

The Petrels had another dominant offensive performance led by senior Jackie Schner and junior Cate Rosenthal. The two recorded 14 and 10 kills, respectively. This was Schner's sixth of seven games with double digit kills on the season. 

Junior Ellie Alfonso added nine kills, eight digs, and three service aces. Sofia Cendoya and Gabbi Phillips continued to play at an elite level; Cendoya added 19 digs and three service aces while Phillips totaled five kills, 34 assists, and 11 digs.

Oglethorpe's victory came three sets to one. The Petrels won the first set 25-23, the second set 25-16, then lost the third set 25-23, and finally closed out the match, winning in the fourth set 25-23.  

Ohio Northern

The Petrels came out strong against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The first set featured a close competition that extended into extra points, but Ohio Northern would win 26-24.  The Polar Bears were able to edge out Oglethorpe in the second set by a score of 25-19, and the third set went to Ohio Northern by a score of 25-10.  

Schner once again led the offensive efforts with 12 kills in the second match on the day, paired with Gabbi Phillips' 23 assists.

Up Next

The Stormy Petrels will return to Rome, Georgia, Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. to open up SAA play at Berry. Berry sits currently ranked at No. 6 in NCAA Division III and will be a good test for Oglethorpe heading into conference play.
