Stormy Petrels fall short in 3-2 loss to Hampden-Sydney

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels suffered a second straight loss on Sunday afternoon after losing 3-2 to Hampden-Sydney.

Oglethorpe started the match strong with many shots on goal. However, Hampden-Sydney scored the opening goal in the 13th minute.

Ethan Harrison originally made the save but could not hold on to it as it landed at the feet of Declan Shaw, who then found Stefan Ngoh as he tapped it into the back of the net. Oglethorpe had several chances though to find the equalizer with blocked shots from Stephen Summerow, Dylan Bapst, and Ian Farquhar. However, Oglethorpe conceded a second goal in the 31st minute after Zakky Johnston doubled the lead for Sydney.

Oglethorpe stayed resilient though and found a goal in the 41st minute as a low cross from Felipe Araujo found Tyler Castor as he tapped it into the back of the net to put his side back in the match. It was the freshman's first goal this season.

Head Coach Jon Akin's side had another strong start in the second half as  Farquhar dribbled into space and provided a perfect pass to Javier Aponte as he also provided a clinical finish to give the Stormy Petrels the equalizer in the 55th minute. It was Aponte's fifth goal of the season.

Momentum then turned to Oglethorpe as they looked like they would be able to find a third goal with quality chances such as a shot off the bar from Matthews Braga in the 66th minute. However, Pierce Boerner would score just seconds later to retake the lead for HSC against the run of play. Oglethorpe responded well with chances to find a late equalizer. However, it was not enough.
