DANVILLE, Ky. – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels broke their two-game losing streak after beating Centre in a 2-1 comeback win in their Southern Atlantic Association opener on Saturday.
It was not an ideal beginning for Oglethorpe as they found themselves down 1-0 in the 12th minute after Luke Morgan scored for Centre. However, Jon Akin's side stayed resilient and found an equalizer in the 30th minute.
Oglethorpe was awarded a free kick that Ian Farquhar took. He sent in a cross that found the towering presence of Daniel Amah as he was able to head it into the back of the net. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season.
The direction then shifted for the men in black and yellow. They caused troubles for Centre's defense and eventually were rewarded for it just 18 minutes after they equalized.
A penalty was given in the 43rd minute for Oglethorpe after a foul was made on Felipe Araujo. The Brazilian forward sent Centre goalkeeper Jacob Camacho the wrong way and slotted the ball into the net. It was the junior's second goal of the season.
In the second half, Oglethorpe had chances to extend their lead from players such as Tyler Castor in the 89th minute when he dribbled past several Centre players and had a good shot at goal that was saved by Camacho. However, they were unable to finish them. This was not a problem though as the Petrels were able to see out their lead through the duration of the second half. They were astute defensively in order to make sure that Centre could not be brought back into the game.
