ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels faced the Panthers of Birmingham Southern College in the first of two Southern Athletic Association matches between the teams. The Panthers were able to end the day with a victory, three sets to one over the Petrels.
The first set of the four went to Birmingham Southern by a score of 25-17 giving BSC the early lead, though Oglethorpe would respond with a 25-20 win in the second set tying the match at 1-1. The third set featured the closest competition in which the Panthers were able to sneak past the Petrels by a margin of 25-23, which would lead to a 25-18 win in the fourth set for the Panthers' 3-1 win over the Petrels.
Oglethorpe was led today offensively by juniors Ellie Alfonso and Cate Rosenthal. Alfonso recorded a career-high 17 kills while Rosenthal added 12 of her own. They each had two service aces on the day as well.
Senior Jackie Schner kept her double-digit kills streak alive with her 11th game with 10+ kills. She totaled 12 today, while sophomore Gabbi Phillips recorded 39 assists. Defensively, it was Sofia Cendoya and Schner that led the team with 17 and 14 digs apiece.
Oglethorpe will get a shot at redemption on October 23, when the Petrels make the journey to Birmingham.
