ATLANTA — Oglethorpe volleyball moved back in the win column after a 3-0 win over the Millsaps College Majors on Sunday. The Stormy Petrels won the first set 25-14 after a 9-1 run in Oglethorpe's favor. The second set featured a closer competition that resulted in the Petrels edging out the Majors 25-21. This was followed by the third and final set that would go to Oglethorpe by a margin of 25-18.
In the first of two Southern Athletic Association matchups between the two teams this season, it was an upperclassmen effort on the offensive side of the net that allowed Oglethorpe to put the game away three sets to none. Junior Ellie Alfonso led the Petrels in the kill column with 12 kills, followed by senior Jackie Schner with 11 and junior Cate Rosenthal with nine. Rosenthal and Schner each added one service ace. Sophomores Gabbi Phillips and Maddie Drawdy led the team in assists with 26 and eight, respectively.
On the defensive side of the net, Schner led with 16 digs followed by junior Sofia Cendoya's 13 and Alfonso's 12 digs. Emelia Sengstock's three blocks led the Petrels followed by Kaitlyn Basset and Phillips' two blocks apiece.
After Sunday's match, Oglethorpe sits at 7-5 on the season and 2-3 in SAA play.
