Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Aponte’s second-half equalizer not enough against Scots

ATLANTA – Ethan Harrison, Ben Alram and Stephen Summerow made the all-tournament team following a close decision for Oglethorpe men's soccer Saturday evening in the final game of Emory's Sonny Carter Invitational. Javier Aponte scored an equalizer for the Stormy Petrels early in the second half, but Covenant broke the tie in the 81st minute to send Oglethorpe to its first loss of the season, 2-1.

Aponte's goal came in the 60th minute on a great finish after being set up by Tyler Castor. Castor took a pass from the right side and used one touch to loft it over the Covenant defense to the waiting foot of Aponte.

Both teams had been over 45 minutes without finding the back of the net as Covenant scored first in the 14th minute. The Scots finally broke the 1-1 tie with less than 10 minutes to go when Knox Gibson struck from long range.

Oglethorpe led the shot count 11-8 and the shots on goal count 5-3. Tuli Mwarumba led the team with three shots while Aponte and Ethan Nunes took two apiece on goal. Harrison made one save.

Match Notes

  • Aponte's goal was his first of the season and third of his career.
  • Oglethorpe now has started the season 0-1-1 with both games being played in Emory's tournament.
  • Four Petrels this season now have been apart of scoring action, as Sebastian Molina and Dylan Bapst accounted for Friday's scoring.
  • The match was a showdown of two of last season's league champions. Oglethorpe is the reigning Southern Athletic Association champion while Covenant is the reigning USA South champion.
