Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Aponte, Cavallaro, Nunes calm Tornados in 3-0 win

ATLANTA – Javier Aponte scored the game winning goal in the 24th minute before Carlos Cavallaro and Ethan Nunes added some cushion in the second half, and the Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up a decisive 3-0 win over the Brevard Tornados Wednesday night in the home opener.

The Stormy Petrels improved to 1-1-1 on the year and more than doubled their scoring output from the first two games. In fact, the team added two more goal scorers to their scoring list this season as Cavallaro and Nunes scored for the first time this season. Oglethorpe has five goals on the year coming from four players, with Aponte leading the team with two.

Ben Alram tallied two assists in the win, nearly coming away with a goal of his own on the first of the two. On one of a handful of great scoring chances in the first half, Alram blasted a shot from the right side inside the penalty area that needed a diving save by Brevard goalkeeper Matheus Rossi. The rebound was left loose on the left side, and Aponte was there to finish it off.

Alram again assisted the Petrels' next goal when he delivered a free kick to an open Cavallaro at the top of the penalty area. Cavallaro guided this one in the right side to double the lead.

In the 83rd minute, Oglethorpe rounded out the scoring with a successful penalty kick from Nunes.

Match Notes

  • This marked Oglethorpe's first shutout of the season and brought the teams goal-against average down to one
  • Oglethorpe outshot Brevard 13-8 and 8-0 on shots on goal
  • This allowed goalkeeper Ethan Harrison to post a shutout without formally making any saves
  • Aponte, Dylan Bapst and Alram all took two shots
