ATLANTA — The Piedmont Lions could not stop the thunder from the Stormy Petrels as Oglethorpe volleyball won in three straight sets Tuesday night in the home opener, 25-18, 26-24, 25-12. Senior Jackie Schner led the Stormy Petrels with a three-set career high of 19 kills, one off the Oglethorpe record for kills by an individual in a three-set match.
This was the third time Oglethorpe won three sets to none out of their four matches on the season.
The first set was a tight competition with the Petrels winning by a margin of 25-18. A kill from Schner ended the set, it would be one of her 19 on the day. The second set was the most competitive of the three sets. Piedmont was able to force extra points tied at 24 apiece, but a service ace from sophomore Briella Kohler would secure the set, winning 26-24. The third and final set featured the largest differential, where the Petrels went on to win 25-12 with a kill from Kohler on the final point.
Schner continued to dominate in her fourth straight game with double digit kills, adding 19 kills and setting a new season high. Junior Cate Rosenthal totaled nine kills and eight digs. On the defensive side, junior Sofia Cendoya added 22 digs. Cendoya's 22 digs is a season high as is Rosenthal's eight.
Sophomore Gabbi Phillips had another great game, with a career high 37 assists and a career high five aces against the Lions.
This is the first matchup of two between the Petrels and the Lions. Oglethorpe makes the journey to Piedmont for the rematch October 19 in The Cave Arena at 7 p.m.
