ATLANTA – Freshman Keimarya Rivera posted her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Oglethorpe women's basketball team to a 67-52 victory over Sewanee Sunday afternoon inside Dorough Field House.
Rivera was the first of nine Petrels in the scoring column and two in double figures as Malia Melton followed with 12 points and six rebounds. The Stormy Petrels used a big run in the first quarter and another big run in the third quarter to pull away for their first Southern Athletic Association win of the season.
Other big contributions came from Olivia Tucker with a career-high nine points, four rebounds and a career-high four steals, and Gabby Hudson with eight points.
Oglethorpe used a key 10-0 run over a span of less than 90 seconds in the first quarter to pull into a lead it would not relinquish. The run featured two steals followed by layups on the other end, including Tucker who had an and-one to cap the run and put the Petrels up 20-10. That was the largest lead of the first half, and the Petrels went into the break ahead by eight, 39-31.
A similar run to start the second half put the game away for the Stormy Petrels. This one came in the form of a 10-3 advantage, with two made free throws by Rivera putting Oglethorpe ahead by 15 just four minutes into the third quarter.
The lead would go as high as 20 after another 10-2 Oglethorpe run spanning the third and fourth quarters.
