ATLANTA – Despite a lead late in the fifth set, the Oglethorpe volleyball team concluded its weekend at home with a 3-2 loss to the Millsaps Majors.
Cate Rosenthal led with 16 kills followed by Ellie Alfonso and Briella Kohler each with 15. Libero Sofia Cendoya tallied 27 digs, followed by Kohler with 23 and Alfonso with 20. Kohler and Autumn Lilly both recorded three aces, and Lilly also had 34 assists.
Rosenthal opened the first set with a kill, but the Majors were ready for battle. The set continued far past the traditional 25-point win after both teams seemed to be equally matched. After hearing the broken record declaration of set point, the Majors were able to claim a 32-30 win.
Millsaps earned the first two points of the second set, but the Petrels came back swinging. Oglethorpe quickly amassed a 10-5 lead and was able to subdue the Majors for the rest of the set. After a kill from Camdyn George, the Petrels nabbed a 25-19 victory.
This energy carried into the third set as Kaitlynn Bassett started off with a kill, followed by a service ace from Lilly. Oglethorpe never allowed Millsaps to take the lead, although the Majors managed to tie things up at 20-20. The Petrels won the set 25-21.
The fourth set did not go well for Oglethorpe. The Majors managed a 25-16 victory after a relentless battle. Then, the fifth and final set opened with a kill from Alfonso, but neither team was able to nail down a scoring streak. In similar fashion to the first set, the two teams pushed past the traditional 15-point win.
Kohler and Gabbi Phillips both managed to get a kill to raise the score to 14-13, but Millsaps gained three consecutive points for the 16-14 win that gave the Majors a win for the match.Â
