Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Petrels earn draw against No. 3 Emory

ATLANTA—Ben Alram scored his ninth goal of the season in the fourth minute, and the Oglethorpe men's soccer team played one of the nation's top teams to a 2-2 draw Tuesday night against No. 3 Emory.

It was one of the most tightly played games of the season for the Stormy Petrels as the final score would indicate. Both teams had plenty of chances with Oglethorpe scoring the first two tallies in the first 20 minutes before Emory battled back with goals in the 39th and 50th minutes.

Alram scored his goal nearly right out of the gates when a through ball from Adrian Levy found JR Cozine streaking through the left side. Cozine then sent a dangerous crossing pass across the face of the net that found Alram there for the close finish.

Another dangerous crossing pass from Cozine a few minutes later saw Oglethorpe double the lead. Cozine looked to connect with Alram once again on a similar play but narrowly missed him. Instead, the cross deflected off an Emory defender near the goal line and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Emory cut back into the deficit late in the first half to make it 2-1 before eventually equalizing in the 50th minute on a shot near the top of the penalty area from Sebastian Rincon.

Oglethorpe continued to pressure the nationally-ranked Eagles into the closing seconds. The last minute, in fact, saw back-to-back corner kicks with close chances for the Petrels to go back into the lead.

Match Notes

  • Emory led the shot count 14-11, including 6-4 on shots on goal.
  • Alram accounted for four Oglethorpe shots to lead the team. This included three he put on goal.

  • This was the first time Oglethorpe conceded a goal in three games and the first time it conceded a non-PK goal in eight games.
  • The draw moved Oglethorpe's record to 9-1-2 overall. The Petrels remained undefeated in the last eight games with wins in seven of those games.
  • Alram's nine goals on the season leads the Southern Athletic Association and ranked No. 41 in NCAA Division III.
  • Cozine brought his assist tally to eight this season which leads the SAA and ranks No. 6 in the NCAA.
