MEMPHIS—Chris Veglia scored his third goal of the season late in the game to give the Stormy Petrels late life, but in the end the Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered its first Southern Athletic Association loss Friday night with a 2-1 result at Rhodes.
Oglethorpe fell behind in the 31st minute before seeing that deficit double in the 67th minute as Rhodes went ahead 2-0 midway through the second half. Veglia found the back of the net with an assist to Ben Alram in the 85th minute to help Oglethorpe cut into that lead, but it would be all the scoring the Stormy Petrels could muster in their first loss in the last nine games.
The loss dropped Oglethorpe to 9-2-2 overall this season, 4-1 in the SAA. Despite the loss, the Petrels remained in control of their destiny relative to winning the SAA regular season. Wins in the last two games of the season will secure the title, and the Petrels can also win the regular season by matching the results of Rhodes over the last two games.
