ATLANTA – Led by Cate Rosenthal's career high in kills and an record-tying assist mark from Autumn Lilly, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Sewanee Tigers 3-0 Saturday afternoon, moving to a 9-7 overall record.
Rosenthal led with 18 kills while Ashlynn Stephens had 10. Libero Sofia Cendoya tallied 19 digs, followed by Breilla Kohler with 15 and Kylee Zimmer with 10. Kaitlynn Bassett had three service aces and Lilly recorded 40 assists.
Oglethorpe secured the first two points of the game, then quickly gained a 9-3 lead. The Tigers were never able to fully recover, although they did give the Petrels quite a scare toward the end of the set. After Stephens made a kill to reach set point, Sewanee earned five points in a row. Ultimately, Oglethorpe claimed a 25-22 win after a kill from Hannah Palmer.
The second set was more of a nail-biter as Sewanee settled in and kept the score close. Thankfully, two service aces and a kill from Bassett combined with a kill by Camdyn Georgeg pushed the Petrels into a 12-6 lead that would give them the upper hand for the rest of the set. The Tigers came too close for comfort toward the end of the set once again, but two kills from Stephens secured a 25-23 win.
Sewanee earned the first point of the third and final set, but the rest of the match reflected the first two sets. The Tigers briefly held the lead toward the end of the set, as Oglethorpe trailed 20-19. However, the Petrels persisted and a kill from Stephens kicked off a streak that carried all the way to the end. A kill from Rosenthal finalized Oglethorpe's 25-20 win for a sweep.
