ATLANTA—It took only 22 seconds for Oglethorpe to get on the board and eventually cruise to a 5-0 victory over Millsaps Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament. Ben Alram had the game-winning tally, and the regular-season champion Stormy Petrels advanced to the semifinals, where they will host Sewanee along with the rest of the tournament next weekend.
The win marked Oglethorpe's 12th of the season to move head coach Jon Akin to 200 all-time wins with the Petrels. Akin is the all-time winningest soccer coach at Oglethorpe with a record of 200-129-33. The win also was the team's school-record 11th shutout of the season and the third in as many games.
Alram put Oglethorpe ahead on the first opportunity of the game, receiving a great pass from Jake Locklear and lofting the shot over the reach of Millsaps goalkeeper Michael Hamauei. Thirty-eight minutes later, Alram scored again, this time with assists to Javier Aponte and Parker McKnight. In the meantime, JR Cozine scored with an assist to Cristian Medina in the 15th minute.
Oglethorpe went into the halftime break ahead 3-0 before Aaron Ibe scored twice in the second half to round out the scoring. Felipe Ferreira and Adrian Jimenez were credited the assists.
