COLUMBUS, Miss.—A late run from Mississippi University for Women sent the Oglethorpe women's basketball team to its first loss Friday evening, a 66-59 defeat on the road. Freshman Briley Elder went 5-of-7 from the perimeter to lead the Stormy Petrels with 15 points.
Elder was the first of four Petrels in double figures, followed by Gabby Hudson and Anna Conza both with 12, then Keimarya Rivera, the reigning Southern Athletic Association newcomer of the year, with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The difference in the game came in the first few minutes and last few minutes. Mississippi University for Women started on a 10-2 run and led for most of the first three quarters until a 7-0 fourth-quarter run from Oglethorpe tied the game at 56-56 with under five minutes left. Then, MUW pulled away once again with a 10-3 run to close the game.
Game Notes
- Following the four players in double figures for scoring, Malia Melton had six points and six rebounds.
- Hudson and Elder both had good games on the glass, with five and six rebounds, respectively. Hudson also tallied a team-high three assists.
- The score was tied three times, including twice in the first half and one final time in the fourth quarter when Elder sank one of her five 3-pointers with under five minutes left.
- The game also featured four lead changes.
- Aside from the game-opening and game-closing runs, MUW also gained a huge edge at the charity stripe, converting 18-of-28 attempts while Oglethorpe went only 3-for-10.
- Aside from Elder, Oglethorpe also suffered from a cold day of shooting from the perimeter, going 3-for-16 minus Elder.
- This was only the second meeting all-time between Oglethorpe and MUW. Oglethorpe won the other meeting 69-38 at home in January of last season.
