ATLANTA—A big second quarter followed by the thwarting of a rally late in the fourth quarter saw the Oglethorpe women's basketball team defeat Ferrum 70-61 Sunday in Dorough Field House. Keimarya Rivera led the Stormy Petrels with 19 points and eight rebounds while freshman Kat Johnson followed with 14 points and six rebounds.
Oglethorpe had its largest lead of 21 points with eight and a half minutes to go until Ferrum used a 21-4 run over six and a half minutes to make it a four-point game. Allison Hoffmann, Johnson, Mia Geveke and Malia Melton then closed the game at the free throw line, combining for a 7-for-10 effort at the charity stripe as Oglethorpe outscored Ferrum 7-3 over the last two and a half minutes.
Hoffmann also had two great defensive plays in the final 70 seconds to come up with a pair of steals, including one in a four-point game with Ferrum looking to cut the deficit to one possession.
Oglethorpe (2-1) built its 21-point lead thanks to a 37-16 run that spanned three quarters of action. It started in a tie game of 22-22 when Geveke drained a 3-pointer to put Oglethorpe into the lead for good.
What followed was a 12-for-25 effort from the field, 4-for-7 effort from three, 10 points from Johnson, eight from Rivera and further scoring from six other players. Oglethorpe went into the halftime break ahead 37-30 on a 15-8 run before coming out of the second-half gate on a 17-8 run.
