Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chloe Clemensen

Men's basketball wins season opener at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore.—Perry Robinson led with 27 points and 12 rebounds, and the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels opened the 2023-24 season on the west coast with an 83-64 win over the Pacific Boxers, dominating the court in the second half.

Malachi Dooley followed with 17 points while Uba Ezigbo and Jordan James totaled nine each. Robinson also tallied three steals, while Ezigbo made six assists. Sophomore Mason Kemp totaled four steals.

"This was a great road win to start the season," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "We turned it over too much, but our defense won us the game tonight. We have really emphasized how we have to be much better defensively this year, and so far, I have loved our defensive intensity and performance in both our preseason scrimmage and tonight. We will have another tough game tomorrow, but it would be great to finish this west coast road trip with a sweep."

Robinson kicked off scoring with a layup, but the Boxers quickly answered with a basket of their own. The first six minutes of the period were neck-and-neck, until Pacific managed a six-point run to gain a 16-10 lead. The Boxers worked up to a 21-12 lead, but the Petrels were ready. Oglethorpe went on a 17-point run over the course of five minutes, earning a 29-21 lead. After this, Pacific would never be out front again. The half ended with two successful free throws from the Boxers, but the Petrels held a padded 34-30 lead.

The second half began with a clean jumper from Robinson. The Boxers battled their way to a 43-37 deficit, then Oglethorpe blindsided them with an eight-point run in which all points came from Robinson. The Petrels continued to score on Pacific, as the Boxers struggled to keep up. The last minute of the game saw Oglethorpe's final points come from a jumper by Dooley, and the Boxers were able to respond with a moot layup.
