Women’s basketball crushes Averett for third straight win

DANVILLE, Ky.—A game-opening 15-0 run during which the Oglethorpe women's basketball team did not miss from the field for the first five minutes led the Stormy Petrels to a resounding 90-52 win over Averett Saturday afternoon in the Lee's Famous Recipe / Hampton Inn Classic hosted by Centre.

The win was Oglethorpe's third straight and second in as many days to feature high scoring on Southern Athletic Association foe Centre's home court. It improved the Petrels to 4-1 this season.

Mia Geveke started the scoring with a made 3-pointer and the Petrels never looked back. What followed was all part of a 15-0 run where the Petrels were 6-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the perimeter, with scoring contributions coming from four players. The run was part of a larger 27-5 run to open the game as the Petrels made their first four 3-pointers and led by 20 at the end of the first quarter.

It only got better for the Petrels from there. Oglethorpe was on pace for a century-mark game in the second quarter before outscoring Averett 26-6 in the third, then extending the lead to as many as 42 in the fourth.

"We put it together on both ends today," said Head Coach Alex Richey after the win. "I thought our intensity on the defensive end and on the glass really set the tine for our team today."

Freshman Briley Elder led Oglethorpe with a career high-tying 15 points along with four rebounds. Keimarya Rivera and Kat Johnson came next with 13 points apiece. Rivera added seven rebounds and three assists while Johnson added four rebounds. Jessamy Gaetanos also reached double digits in scoring with 11.

Game Notes

  • Elder's 15 points came on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 shooting from three. In five games, Elder has scored 13 or more three times.
  • Allison Hoffmann tallied a career-high five assists to go alongside her five points.
  • Following the double digit scorers was Malia Melton with eight. Eleven of the 13 Petrels who entered the game entered the scoring column.
  • Oglethorpe improved to 3-1 all-time against Averett, dating back to the start of the NCAA era in 1991. Oglethorpe has won each of the last three meetings.
