ATLANTA—Sophomore Keimarya Rivera tallied her first double-double of the season with a career high 28 points alongside 14 rebounds to lead the Oglethorpe women's basketball team to an 82-73 win at home over LaGrange Tuesday evening. Rivera scored 26 points in the second half, and the Stormy Petrels used a 29-17 run in the third quarter to pull away.
The win was Oglethorpe's fourth straight, improving the Petrels to 5-1. Eight other players made their way into the scoring column following Rivera, most notably Malia Melton who had a huge game with 16 points and five rebounds. Briley Elder hit double figures for the fourth time this season with 10 points and three rebounds.
Rivera scored 15 of her points on a 19-10 run Oglethorpe used to pull away over a six-minute stretch in the third quarter. It was a four-point game at the half and LaGrange cut it as close as three early in the second half, but this pivotal run saw Oglethorpe take control of the game for good.
"This was a really good home win against a good team tonight," said Head Coach Alex Richey. "It's fun to watch the confidence grow within this group when they succeed in achieving their goals. After this nice break, I'm looking forward to continuing to progress."
