LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Lynchburg Hornets 3-0 but fell 3-0 to the No. 25 Covenant Scots in a tri-match held at Covenant Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg Match
Ashlynn Stephens led with 15 kills, followed by Cate Rosenthal with 11. Sofia Cendoya recorded 11 digs while Stephens and Gabbi Phillips both made 10. Phillips also recorded 29 assists while Briella Kohler made three service aces.Â
The match began with two service aces from Kohler, then another point for the Petrels after a Lynchburg attack error. The first set remained smooth sailing for Oglethorpe, quickly defeating the Hornets 25-16. Â
The second set proved to be much more of a challenge, as the Hornets were the ones to kick off scoring. The game was neck-and-neck at 12-10 until the Petrels went on a scoring spree and moved into a 16-12 lead with a 6-0 run. However, Lynchburg managed to do the same later on, removing Oglethorpe's cushion and climbing to a 22-21 lead. The Hornets were the first to reach set point, but the Petrels remained resilient. The teams went back and forth until Oglethorpe's precision resulted in a 33-31 win for the Petrels.
The third and final set was closer than the first set, but not as strenuous as the second. Stephens opened the set with a kill, and the teams raced neck-and-neck again. That is, until Lynchburg managed a scoring streak and gained a 12-7 lead, then recorded another small streak to jump to an 18-11 lead. The Petrels were able to make a comeback, kicked off by another kill by Stephens. This time, Oglethorpe quickly made it to match point and kept the Hornets at bay, claiming a 25-22 victory.
Covenant MatchÂ
Rosenthal and Stephens led with eight kills apiece. Gabbi Phillips recorded 13 digs while Stephens and Cendoya both tallied nine. Phillips and Autumn Lilly both made nine assists.Â
