Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball drops SAA opener

aATLANTA—Briley Elder recorded a career high 21 points, including 15 in the first half, but Oglethorpe could not thwart Berry's second-half surge in a 65-57 loss to the Vikings Saturday evening in the Southern Athletic Association opener.

Elder was on fire for much of the first half as she went 3-for-6 from the perimeter in helping Oglethorpe go ahead by as many as 12 in the second quarter. This was partly thanks to a 21-8 Stormy Petrel run spanning 11 and a half minutes starting late in the opening period. Elder had 12 of her points on that streak alone.

Oglethorpe was unable to put together the same in the second half, as Berry tied the game on a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter to cap off a 13-3 Viking run. Shortly after that, the Vikings used an 8-4 run to take the lead for good.

Following Elder, Keimarya Rivera came next in the scoring column with a double-double consisting of 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was her second double-double in the last three games. Allison Hoffmann scored eight, and Mia Geveke had five points and seven rebounds.

Game Notes

  • Geveke tallied career highs in rebounds (seven) and steals (four).
  • Anna Conza hit a career high in steals with four.
  • Rivera's double-double was her second of the season and eighth of her career.
  • Eight Petrels made their way into the scoring column and all nine who saw minutes entered the rebounding column.
  • The game featured two ties and two lead changes.
  • Oglethorpe trails the all-time series with Berry 14-12 dating back to 2010. Berry has won the last two meetings.
