ROME, Ga. – In a thrilling season opener, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the NCAA Division II Shorter Hawks 11-10. Senior Hinton Chandler scored the game-winning goal with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to break a 10-10 tie and help the Petrels rally back from deficits of 10-8 and 9-6.
Senior Max Brand led the Petrels in scoring, recording a career-high of five goals. Richard Bedgood IV followed with three, and Israel Pendleton-Moore recorded two goals. Goalie Addison Irwin recorded 17 saves. Pendelton-Moore and senior Carsen Van Note each recorded two assists.Â
Shorter was the first to score, but Oglethorpe quickly responded as Brand scored his first goal of the game. Two goals from Bedgood toward the end of the period gave Oglethorpe a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, the Petrels were unable to score in the second quarter as Shorter built up a 6-3 lead by the end of the period.Â
 The Hawks remained in control throughout the third quarter, ending the period up 9-8. Â
Tensions were high in the final quarter, as it seemed the game could go either way. With six minutes left on the clock, a goal from Brand with an assist by Van Note tied things up at 10-10. Oglethorpe soon rose to the occasion, with Chandler recording the final goal of the game to give Oglethorpe an 11-10 victory over the Hawks. Â
As a team, the Petrels recorded 22 shots on goal, went 18-24 on clears, won 10 faceoffs, and scooped 25 ground balls. Â
