ATLANTA – Sam Mills went 4-for-5, but Oglethorpe dropped its season opener to Emory, 7-4, Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park. The Stormy Petrels rallied late in the game but suffered from a rough start which saw them fall behind 5-0 after two innings.
Nick Tarantino was the first to put the Petrels on the board in the 2023 season, driving home Carter Guarino in the third inning on a bases-loaded ground ball to third.
Guarino later doubled in a run in the seventh to help ignite a would-be rally. Mills, the reigning Southern Athletic Association newcomer of the year, followed in the next at-bat with a two-RBI single up the middle to make the score 7-4 in favor of Emory, but that would be where the rally would end, as two straight groundouts, one a double play, ended the Oglethorpe threat.
Game Notes
- Mills' four-hit day was accompanied by two RBI's and a first-inning double.
- This was Mill's second four-hit game in just his second season. His first came on March 6 last season.
- Mason Pearcy and Carson Weir also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.
- Freshman Aiden Hosford tallied a hit in his collegiate debut, making the start at third base.
- Relievers Thomas Krystopa, Colin Stewart and Parker Spring combined for 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. Krystopa accounted for 2.1 of those innings and struck out three.
