MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Oglethorpe nearly bounced back after a tough loss in game one but ultimately lost both games of a doubleheader to Maryville on Saturday. Maryville took game one 10-0 and game two 5-3 despite the Stormy Petrels having a 3-1 lead.
Sam Mills and Jonathan Cruz had the big bats in the first game, each going 2-for-4, on an otherwise quiet offensive effort in the series opener. Cruz then followed that up with a 3-for-4 effort in game two, including a solo home run he hit in the third to give Oglethorpe a 3-1 lead.
This followed an RBI groundout from Drew Jabaley and a Cooper Wilson RBI single in the second. However, Maryville answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third to tie the game, then went into the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
Game Notes
- Blair Barnes tallied his first hit as a Petrel in the second game of the doubleheader.
- Wilson's RBI single in the second marked his first hit as a Petrel.
- Cruz's three-hit game is the second of the season for Oglethorpe after Mills tallied four hits in the season opener.
- Thomas Krystopa made another strong relief appearance striking out two in an inning and two-thirds. He gave up one unearned run as part of a no-decision.
