MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Drew Jabaley hit a second-inning home run and drove in a fifth-inning run on a single as part of a 2-for-4 day, but Oglethorpe's baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game set at Maryville, 9-2, Sunday on the road.
Jabaley was one of three Stormy Petrels with multiple hits as Jonathan Cruz and Aiden Hosford were 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, but Oglethorpe's bats were otherwise quiet with Maryville storming into a 6-2 lead through the first five innings.
Oglethorpe's relief pitching put together another great combined outing, as Michael Sarzen, Jake Hill, Colby James and Will Marconi went the last four and two-thirds innings giving up no earned runs.
Cruz leads the team through four games of the season so far with a .467 batting average alongside two runs, an RBI and a homer. Sam Mills is next with a .353 average and a pair of doubles.
Up next, Oglethorpe heads to Huntingdon on Tuesday and Emory on Saturday.
