MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A rally in the middle innings capped off by a two-run homer from Carson Weir was not enough to overcome a big early deficit the Oglethorpe baseball team faced in an 8-6 loss at Huntingdon on Tuesday. The Stormy Petrels trailed 5-0 through three innings and 8-2 through four in the road loss.
Weir's homer was the first of the season and third of his career. It made the score 8-5 in the sixth inning and gave Oglethorpe renewed life, but the Petrels went scoreless over the next two-plus frames. An RBI triple from Nick Tarantino in the ninth brought the tying run to the plate but a strikeout would end the threat in the next at-bat.
Aiden Hosford and Tarantino led the Petrels at the dish, both posting two hits. Tarantino's came alongside two RBI's and a run scored. Eight Petrels had a hit in the loss.
Oglethorpe once again had a few solid efforts out of the bullpen. Colin Stewart was the first in relief and went two innings allowing only two hits and no runs. He walked one and struck out one before handing things off to Colby James who close out the last two and one-third innings with no hits and no runs. James struck out two in his portion of the sixth, pitched a perfect seventh, then faced the minimum in the eighth.
Up next, Oglethorpe heads to Emory again this weekend for a three-game set. Teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. Oglethorpe will be home the following weekend for the start of its Southern Athletic Association slate.
