Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Robbie Coull

Women’s basketball falls one point short of advancing to SAA semifinals

ROME, Ga.--After a season full of action-packed games, clutch victories, and heart-breaking defeats, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels' season came to an end after a one-point 64-63 loss to Berry College in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament.

After beating the Vikings 65-54 in their last contest, Oglethorpe traded buckets with Berry back and forth until the final seconds of the game but could not come out on top.

In her first taste of the collegiate postseason, freshman Keimarya Rivera dropped her seventh career double-double totaling 21 points and a monstrous career-high 16 rebounds while adding three assists and two blocks. The freshman has been the Petrels' number one option throughout the entire season.

Olivia Tucker matched Rivera's 21 points on the day, tallying four rebounds and four assists. The redshirt sophomore has been a key addition to this year's team. Another freshman, Mia Geveke of Kennesaw, Georgia, followed with 11 points of her own.

Oglethorpe's freshman class played a huge role and had a giant impact on the season. Along with a strong returning sophomore and junior class, the Petrels' young core looks promising for years to come.

With this SAA tournament quarterfinal loss, the Petrels finished their season at 13-12. Oglethorpe scored a total of 1634 points on the season, averaging 65.4 points per game while holding opponents to an average of 61.2. With no seniors on the roster, Oglethorpe looks to build off the momentum this freshman class set in the 2022-2023 season moving into next year.
