Women’s lacrosse dominates season opener 23-1

ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels opened their season with a bang in a 23-1 win over the Truett McConnell University Bears, an effort that involved 11 Petrels finding the back of the net.

After a successful 11-5 season last year, the Stormy Petrels looked to improve heading into the 2023 season and jumped out to a great start under first-year head coach Taylor Martin. The win marked the first for Martin in her head coaching debut.

Of the 11 Petrels making their way into the scoring column, freshman Anna Ramsden out of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and senior Kendall White both led with four goals and one assist combining for eight of Oglethorpe's 23. Juniors Ally Moir and Sydney Trammell followed with three goals apiece, while Makenna Bowens and Jessie Gunn both added two goals each.

Oglethorpe brought the storm from the very start as the Petrels scored three goals in the first minute of the game. The team continued to find success recording 12 first-quarter goals while holding Truett-McConnell to no shots.

Scoring slowed in the second, though Oglethorpe managed to scored six goals to go into halftime up 18-0.

Coming out of the half, the Petrels added their 18th and 19th goals. These two third-quarter goals would be the lowest-scoring quarter of the game. The final quarter of action featured three more Oglethorpe goals and the lone goal that came unassisted for the Bears with just under seven minutes to go in the game.

The Petrels finished the game with 29 shots and 23 goals shooting 79% with all but one shot on goal.  Oglethorpe scooped 21 ground balls and went a perfect 6-6 on clears.

Trammell led the Petrels with six points split evenly between three goals and three assists. Moir, Ramsden and White all followed with five points each, Moir with three goals and two assists.

Oglethorpe's groundball efforts were led by Kaitlynn Alford and Savannah Freeman both scooping four ground balls each. Alford finished with one goal and one assist for two points on the night while Freeman recorded her first goal in her first collegiate game.

Oglethorpe looks to continue its success as they are 1-0 on the season and looking in mid-season form out of the gate.
