MISENHEIMER, N.C.— After dominating at home in their season opener, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels carried that success into their first road game of the season in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Oglethorpe traveled to Pfeiffer University to face the Falcons in their season opener where the Petrels brought the storm, clippings the Falcons' wings with a 20-9 win.
The Petrels started their season 2-0 for the second season in a row. Just last year, Oglethorpe hosted Pfeiffer as their second game of the season and beat them 17-7. Oglethorpe is 2-0 against the Falcons all time.
Ally Moir, the junior attackman out of St. Johns, Florida, scored a team-high five goals and added an assist for her six points on the day. Kendall White was responsible for another six points by way of four goals and two assists— her six-point performance follows her five points in the season opener earlier in the week.
Sydney Trammell recorded a season-high four goals, while Anna Ramsden added another four goals to match the four goals in the previous game.
Savannah Freeman, the freshman out of Grayson, Georgia, led Oglethorpe's defensive efforts scooping four ground balls and causing four turnovers, game highs in both categories. Kaitlynn Alford, a junior midfielder, played well on both sides of the ball recording two goals and one assist while adding two ground balls and one caused turnover.Â
The Falcons started out with the hot hand, scoring two goals before Oglethorpe would score the next seven goals in a row— a scoring effort that involved six scorers. The Petrels continued to outplay their opponents, even holding them scoreless in the final quarter of action.
Now sitting at 2-0 for the second year in a row, only this year under first-year head coach Taylor Martin who has the Petrels sitting in a good place so early into the season. Three Petrels, Moir, White and Sydney Trammell, all have recorded 10 or more points only two games into the 2023 season. Moir and White have 11 points while Trammell has recorded 10.Â
Oglethorpe's offense has proven to be as efficient as it is effective. Four Petrels are shooting 100% of their shots on goal, while the team's top four scorers are shooting 70% or higher from the field.
