Stewart, Hosford shine but Petrels drop Hendrix finale

ATLANTA – Four hitless innings from Colin Stewart and three hits from Aiden Hosford were not enough in the finale of a three-game Southern Athletic Association set, as Hendrix defeated Oglethorpe 8-1 to win the series Sunday at Hermance Stadium.

The first two games of the series on Saturday saw a split with the first team to score proving to be the winner, and Sunday was no different. Hendrix plated a run in the top of the first on a fielding error, then two more in the second on a two-run dinger to left-center field. That was all the scoring the Warriors needed, and it put them ahead 3-0.

The closest Oglethorpe would get came in the fourth when Jonathan Cruz came home to score on a balk. The Stormy Petrels left runners on second and third that inning, and Hendrix ended up running away with the win with five runs across the seventh and eighth.

Game Notes

  • Oglethorpe entered the series having won two of the last three series against Hendrix. After Sunday's loss, the Petrels are 14-19 against Hendrix since the formation of the SAA.
  • Hosford went 3-for-4, marking the first three-hit game of his collegiate career. He previously posted a trio of two-hit games.
  • Cruz and Sam Mills were both 1-for-4, Cruz adding a run.
  • Stewart had a masterful relief appearance by striking out three across four innings starting in the second.
  • Following Oglethorpe's combined no-hitter in game two of the series, Stewart followed suit with a no-hit effort in his four innings of work.
  • Colby James also threw a scoreless frame in the seventh, Tate Henderson got the Petrels out of a jam in the eighth, and Will Marconi threw a scoreless ninth.

Up Next

Oglethorpe hits the road for Piedmont midweek before returning home for Wittenberg over next weekend. The next SAA series will start March 18 at home against Centre.
