Game Recap: Baseball |

Stewart shines but Petrels defeated in 10th inning

ATLANTA—Colin Stewart struck out a career high eight in a career high 7.1 innings and the Oglethorpe baseball team had the lead in the eighth inning but ultimately fell 2-1 in 10 innings to Sewanee Friday night. The game was the first of a three-game Southern Athletic Association set.

Stewart faced only four over the minimum in the longest outing of his career. He scattered six hits and walked none on 83 pitches.

The Stormy Petrels were heading toward a win when Sam Mills drove in Jonathan Cruz with a two-out single in the fifth inning to break the scoreless deadlock.

They carried that lead into the eighth, but the Tigers leveled the affair with a double to right field that scored the tying run from first with nobody out. Stewart worked his way out of that jam by picking off a base runner at second for the first out of the inning, but a single in the next at-bat saw him hand things over to Colby James in relief.

James saw immediate success with a couple of punchouts looking to escape that threat, then he struck out two in a perfect ninth, but Sewanee would go into the lead in the top of the 10th after a leadoff single followed by a one-out double.

Game Notes

  • Stewart's previous career high for innings came in 2021 in a win over Hendrix.
  • Cruz and Nick Tarantino both went 2-for-4 to lead the Petrels at the plate.
  • James' outing included five strikeouts for a combined 13 between him and Stewart. This marked the second highest tally of the season following the team's 15 combined strikeouts last week at No. 1 Birmingham Southern.
  • Oglethorpe loaded the bases in each of the first two innings but came up empty in both. This led to leaving 10 runners on base in the loss, compared to Sewanee's four.

Up Next

Oglethorpe and Sewanee finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to first pitch, Parker Hildebrecht and Carson Weir will be honored for senior day. This marks the last home date of the season for the Stormy Petrels.
