ATLANTA—Oglethorpe honored seniors Parker Hildebrecht and Carson Weir prior to Saturday's home finale, but the Stormy Petrels were dealt a pair of losses and suffered a three-game sweep to Sewanee. After Friday's thrilling 10-inning affair that saw Sewanee win 2-1, the visiting Tigers followed on Saturday with wins of 9-4 and 2-0.
The series was a story of what could have been for the Petrels, who left 27 runners on base across three games, including 10 on Friday and 10 in Saturday's nightcap.
Game 2 | Sewanee 2, Oglethorpe 0
Oglethorpe left runners on first and second in the first inning and had them loaded in the second but came up empty both times. It followed the same script of Friday when the team left the bases loaded in each of the first two frames.
Sewanee then took the lead in the third on a walk followed by back-to-back doubles to go ahead 2-0. Until that point, starting pitcher Zach Turner had been nearly flawless, retiring eight of the first nine he faced, and he returned to that form once the runs scored by facing only one over the minimum during his last two and one-third innings.
It was not enough, however, as Oglethorpe was shut out for only the second time this season.
Aiden Hosford led the team with two hits in the finale. Colby James got his second appearance in relief of Turner and struck out two in two hitless frames.
Game 1 | Sewanee 9, Oglethorpe 4
The game went back and forth for the first five innings until Sewanee finally took the lead for good in the sixth. Oglethorpe had the lead 3-2 after Hildebrecht's sacrifice fly in the fourth, but a two-run homer from Sewanee in the top of the fifth swung the lead back into the Tigers' favor.
Hosford singled home Cooper Wilson in the fifth to tie the game once again, but Sewanee responded again quickly to retake the lead, then ran away with it with three runs in the eighth.
Jonathan Cruz and Brennan Boone led the Petrels with two hits apiece while Gavin Latham and Charlie Boyce had the best efforts on the pitching staff. Latham went one and one-third scoreless innings starting in the sixth and Boyce threw a perfect ninth.

Oglethorpe hits the road for the remainder of the 2023 schedule. After a trip to Piedmont on Tuesday, the Petrels will go to Millsaps next weekend for the regular-season finale.Â
