MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Tied 15-15 in overtime, senior attack Kendall White scored the game-winning goal to advance Oglethorpe past Centre, 16-15, and into the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament Friday evening. This marked Oglethorpe's first tournament win and the team's first win over Centre in program history. Â
After a 15-13 loss to the Colonels earlier this season, Oglethorpe was ready to come in firing in this SAA quarterfinal matchup. The contest was back and forth throughout its 60+ minutes, with the Colonels getting out to an early 5-1 lead before the Petrels caught fire with a six-goal scoring run. Both teams traded goals until the end of the fourth quarter in a combined 31-point shootout.
Junior Ally Moir led Oglethorpe's offensive efforts recording six points on the night via four goals and two assists. Freshman Anna Ramsden added another four goals in the contest. Both Kaitlynn Alford and Kendall White tallied two goals in the win, both players making essential plays in order to secure the win.
Another pair of scorers, Sydney Trammell and Makenna Bowens, both recorded five points. Trammell had one goal in the 6-0 scoring run and matched her season-high with four assists. Bowens' five points came by way of three goals and two assists.
Goalie Tori Perez had another great game with 16 saves, including a clutch one from close range in the final minute of regulation that would have sent Centre into the lead.
The Stormy Petrels were able to bring the storm and are looking to keep it rolling into their next match-up as they prepare for the SAA semifinal against top-seeded Rhodes.
Game Notes
- In addition to the historic team win, Alford made history at the individual level by becoming only the fifth player in program history to record 100 career goals. She hit the milestone with career No. 100 to give Oglethorpe a 9-7 lead early in the third quarter.
- The win avenged Oglethorpe's midseason loss to the Colonels as well as last year's tournament loss in which Centre won 21-8.
- Oglethorpe improved to 2-0 in overtime this season. The last time Oglethorpe went to overtime prior to this season was in 2019, and Friday's win improved the program's overtime record to 3-1.
- Moir, Oglethorpe's career scoring leader with 152 goals, scored for the eighth straight game.
- Oglethorpe improved to 11-5 (3-3 SAA) with eight wins in the last 11 games. The 3-3 SAA record was good for a three-way tie with Centre and Sewanee during the regular season, but Oglethorpe had to settle for the five seed due to goal differential.
- The quarterfinal game was played at Rhodes, the tournament's top seed who is hosting one side of the bracket.
