JACKSON, Miss.—One of the wildest finishes of the season saw Oglethorpe's baseball team drop the finale of a three-game Southern Athletic Association set to Millsaps, 6-5, on Sunday. Oglethorpe suffered a sweep in the series after Millsaps won both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 10-0 and 8-7.
Game Three | Oglethorpe 5, Millsaps 6
It looked to be a win in the regular-season finale for the Stormy Petrels when Carter Drake followed his four-hit game in Saturday's nightcap with a three-run home in the eighth inning of Sunday's series finale. The home run swung a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead, scoring Cooper Wilson and Sam Mills.
The Petrels were then three outs away from salvaging the series but could not escape a three-run rally by Millsaps in the bottom half.
The excitement was far from over, however, as Oglethorpe quickly put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth when Nick Tarantino walked then Aiden Hosford bunted him to second. The Petrels trailed 6-5 at that point and put the tying run on third when Wilson singled to right center, but an out on the base path followed by a strikeout saw Oglethorpe leave the bases loaded.
Six Petrels earned a hit, led by Mills who went 2-for-3.
Game Two | Oglethorpe 7, Millsaps 8
A career day at the plate from Carter Drake was not enough as the team surrendered five unearned runs in the fourth on the way to a close loss. Drake went 4-for-4 with four singles, including one in the sixth when Oglethorpe turned an 8-4 deficit into an 8-7 deficit but left the bases loaded. Another Drake single came in the seventh with two out in Oglethorpe's final hope, but Drake's pinch runner was caught stealing to end the game.
After Drake, Weir followed next in the multihit column with a 3-for-4 effort. Drew Jabaley and Greg Johnson also posted two hits. Colby James gave up only one earned run over four innings in the start but suffered the loss.
Game One | Oglethorpe 0, Millsaps 10
Weir led with two hits, but the Petrels went scoreless for only the third time this season. One of his hits led off the fourth in what would turn into a bases-loaded-with-one-out opportunity, but the Petrels could not push one across and still trailed 2-0 exiting that frame.
Those same woes returned in the sixth when a two-out walk followed by two singles loaded the bases again in a 2-0 game, but a ground ball ended the threat for Oglethorpe. Millsaps took a 3-0 lead through six before putting up seven runs to finish the game in the seventh.
