DEMOREST, Ga.—The Oglethorpe men's soccer program wiped out Piedmont University in a 4-0 road win on Sunday, extending their unbeaten streak to three games. It was a quick start for Jon Akin's side as the first goal for the team came in the fourth minute.
Ben Alram opened the scoring after a great set piece play. It was the junior's third goal of the season. Parker McKnight had the assist off the free kick as he made a great pass to Alram in the box. It was the graduate student's first assist of the season.
Just 10 minutes later, Oglethorpe doubled its advantage. Alram rose to the occasion once again as he fired the ball past Piedmont goalkeeper Bobby Wood and into the top corner after Piedmont failed to clear the ball. The men in black and yellow caused Piedmont problems with their high press.
In the 53rd minute, Alram had a hat trick. It was a great bending shot to put the game out of reach for Piedmont. JR Cozine had the assist. It was the freshman's fifth assist of the season.
The Petrels put the icing on the cake in the 80th minute. Chris Veglia scored a stunning volley to ultimately confirm that Oglethorpe would escape the lion's den with three points. It was the freshman's second goal of the season.
It was a great performance from the players. From the beginning of the match, Oglethorpe stamped its authority. The Petrels were quick and dangerous on the attack and were strong defensively. The collective hard work of the team paid off as they dominated using their signature style of play.
