ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels claimed their first Southern Athletic Association win after defeating the Birmingham Southern Panthers 3-2.
Ellie Alfonso led with 15 kills, followed by Briella Kohler and Cate Rosenthal both totaling nine. Kohler also tallied six aces and 15 digs. Sofia Cendoya recorded 18 digs and Alfonso 13. Gabbi Phillips tallied 30 assists.
Oglethorpe earned three points to open the first set, but the Panthers were not going to go down without a fight. Birmingham Southern was able to briefly gain the lead at 16-15, but remained on Oglethorpe's tail until the Petrels secured a 25-22 win.
The Panthers took charge early in the second set, but the rest was neck-and-neck. Birmingham Southern was the first to reach set point at 24-22, but neither side wanted to give up the win. The Panthers reached set point three times before Oglethorpe claimed a 29-27 win.
However, the tiring second set proved to have an effect on the Petrels. A kill from Alfonso started the third set off right, but the Panthers quickly overwhelmed them and went on for a 25-11 win. Â
Phillips opened the fourth set with a service ace, and the Petrels gained two more unanswered points to go ahead 3-0. This set resulted in the same tension as the second but ended with a 27-25 win for Birmingham Southern.
The fifth and final set was the most nail-biting of all and began with a point going to the Panthers. Oglethorpe then won the next six to gain a 6-1 lead, and Birmingham Southern was able to regain some ground but never fully recover. Oglethorpe reached eight points and the teams switched sides, which in hindsight also marked the point of the game being in Oglethorpe's hands. The Panthers continued to put up a fight, but the Stormy Petrels pulled through for a 15-11 win to claim a 3-2 win for the match.Â
