Petrels drop road game at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels faced a tough battle at Birmingham Southern and fell 86-80 to the Panthers. Perry Robinson led with 26 points and 14 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the season.

Behind Robinson, Jordan James recorded 15 points. Dylan Pumpian and Jackson Kemp both scored 11 points while Kemp also had a career high of six assists.

"We had a tough weekend shooting the ball for the first game and a half," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "We finally started making some shots in the second half today. We just shot it poorly in the first half, and so not only were we not scoring points, but we were allowing our opponent to get out in transition. The one positive today was the fight that we showed. Once we were down big, we just kept giving the guys mini goals to cut the score to this or cut the score to that. We kept cutting into the lead, but we just ran out of time. But I loved the fight that we showed. We will bounce back."

The Panthers opened the game with a 3-pointer, and Pumpian was able to respond with one of his own. Oglethorpe briefly took the lead, but Birmingham Southern kept the first few minutes a close game. However, the Panthers found a decent run that would keep them on top for the rest of the game. The Petrels continued to fight but headed into halftime trailing 42-29.

Birmingham Southern continued their lead in the second half, and created a bleak period for Oglethorpe. The Petrels closed the gap a bit thanks to clear shots from Robinson but ultimately fell 86-80.
