Petrels start 2024 with lopsided SAA win

ATLANTA—Keimarya Rivera posted her 10th career double-double and Anna Conza posted double digits in scoring, and the Oglethorpe women's basketball team routed Hendrix 82-44 Friday night in a Southern Athletic Association game at Dorough Field House.

All 10 Stormy Petrels who entered the game in the first half entered the scoring column as Oglethorpe scored the first nine points of the game and built a lead of 30 late in the second quarter. By the end of the contest, 12 Petrels had made it into the scoring column and the team went ahead by as many as 44 in the final quarter.

Rivera's double-double was her fourth of the season and 10th of her career. She had 10 rebounds in the first half, finishing with 11, to go with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. She added two blocks and one steal. Conza came next in scoring with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She connected on all three 3-point attempts and added four rebounds and one assist with no turnovers.

Following close behind was Malia Melton who stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds and a game high four assists. Kayla DeHerrera came next with a career high of eight points.

Game Notes

  • Oglethorpe's defense held Hendrix to only five made baskets and 15 points in the first half.
  • Oglethorpe posted a season high on the rebounding column with 53 rebounds. All 14 Petrels who entered the game recorded at least one rebound.
  • After Melton's made basket on the opening possession of the game 13 second in, Oglethorpe led the whole way.
  • Oglethorpe shot the lights out from the perimeter, knocking down 11 of them which was four off the Oglethorpe single-game record for made 3-pointers. Conza made three, the first of seven Petrels with at least one make. Jessamy Gaetanos (2-for-4) and Briley Elder (2-for-6) made multiple 3-pointers.
  • Oglethorpe moved to 27-33 all-time against Hendrix, in a series that started in 1993. This marked the 13th straight victory for Oglethorpe over Hendrix.

Oglethorpe hosts Rhodes Sunday at 1 p.m. before hitting the road next weekend to take on Sewanee and Centre.
