Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Petrels take SAA preseason favorite to OT but fall

ATLANTA—The second straight double-double by Keimarya Rivera and a near double-double from Malia Melton were not enough as the Oglethorpe women's basketball team fell in overtime to Rhodes 71-62 Sunday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels led at the half and used a great fourth-quarter effort but ran out of gas in the extra period.

Allison Hoffmann had the last big bucket in the closing stretch of regulation to tie the game 59-59 with a layup with one minute to go. It was part of an 8-4 run Oglethorpe used in the final five minutes to force the first overtime of the season. The Petrels then made a stop on the defensive end to set up a final possession with a chance to win in regulation but came up empty themselves.

Rhodes then scored the first nine points of overtime to pull away with the win.

Game Notes

  • Rivera's double-double was the second straight and fifth of the season. It was also the 11th of her career and came with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Rivera added three assists, including the pass that led to Hoffmann's game-tying basket in the final minute, and one blocked shot.
  • Melton tied her career high in scoring with 16 points and was one rebound shy of her career high, finishing with nine rebounds.
  • Briley Elder also hit double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Kayla DeHerrera finished with a career-high nine points and had a big 3-pointer to tie the game early in the fourth quarter before both teams went into a scoring draught until the final push.
