Petrels remain undefeated in SAA play

ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels captured their third Southern Athletic Association victory as Perry Robinson led with 24 points for a 77-67 win over the Rhodes Lynx Sunday.

Robinson was followed by Jordan James with 15 points, Dylan Pumpian with 12 and Jackson Kemp with 10. Mason Kemp led in rebounds with a career high of seven, J. Kemp tallied four assists and five rebounds, and Robinson made six rebounds and one block.

"I felt like today was one of our most complete games, along with the Berry game last month," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "We played well on both ends of the court. I thought we executed the defensive game plan well, and we played extremely hard. We also executed well offensively. We have had guys step up the last two games to replace some guys that were out, and I thought today was a complete team win."

Pumpian sank a 3-pointer to get the game rolling, and the Lynx responded with a 3-pointer of their own. Oglethorpe went back and forth for most of the first half, until a 3-pointer from J. Kemp gave the Petrels a 22-19 lead and an edge that would last for the rest of the game. The last eight minutes of the period saw Oglethorpe gain significant ground, heading into halftime leading 43-34 after a layup from James.

Rhodes was the first to score in the second period, but good free throws from Robinson kept the Petrels in a significant lead. The Lynx did manage to shrink their deficit to three points at 45-42, but a 3-pointer from Pumpian quickly shut that down. The Lynx continued to try to claw their way back on top, but Oglethorpe remained out of Rhodes' reach. The Petrels were given a bit of a scare near the back half of the period, but Oglethorpe came out on top at 77-67.

"We are excited about the way we have started conference play," Ponder continued, "but we realize it's early, and now we have to go win on the road."

Game Notes

  • James made a season high number of steals.
