MEMPHIS--The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels succumbed to Rhodes College while on the road in a 3-0 loss on Saturday. Oglethorpe lost in three sets, 29-27, 25-21, 25-20, despite leading 22-20 in the first set, 19-17 in the second set, and 16-15 in the third set.
The first set of the match started out slow for the Stormy Petrels after an attack error, but they soon got into the groove with a kill from Ashlynn Stephens. Oglethorpe fought hard with the set going far above the usual 25-point win but sadly Rhodes took it 29-27.
The second set started off much like the first, with the Stormy Petrels falling behind the Lynx. Oglethorpe did not give up and fought their way back up with the help of Gabbi Phillips, who had 16 assists. However, the gap was too big to close and the Stormy Petrels lost the set 25-21.
The Stormy Petrels had a promising start to the third set after a kill by Briella Kohler, one of 11 that Kohler would make throughout the match. The score was pretty even until around halfway through the set when the Lynx pulled ahead. The Petrels did not give up catching up to them before surrendering the set 25-20, giving the Lynx the match.
Oglethorpe will be on the road Sunday to play Hendrix College. They will spend one more weekend on the road before returning home on October 23 to go up against Berry College.
