JACKSON, Miss.—Goals from Aaron Ibe, Steele Norton and Javier Aponte helped the Oglethorpe men's soccer team secure an important 3-0 win over Millsaps on the road Sunday afternoon. The victory moved the Stormy Petrels back into the sole Southern Athletic Association lead as the end of the season approaches.
It took exactly 26 minutes of Oglethorpe chances for the Petrels to finally break through on a set play at the start of the 27th minute. Adrian Levy took the free kick from the top of the right side of the penalty area and his shot, saved by Millsaps goalkeeper Michael Hamauei, bounced back into play for Ibe to finish off from close range.
Less than 11 minutes later, Norton finished off a goal at close range when a low cross from Aponte found Norton inside the six-yard box.
The Petrels took that 2-0 lead into the halftime break but quickly made it 3-0 in the second half. On another set play, a free kick from Ethan Nunes found Aponte inside the penalty area for a header that went into the side netting.
This rounded out the scoring for both teams despite several more quality opportunities for the Stormy Petrels.
