Volleyball comes out victorious on senior day

ATLANTA—Seniors led the way as the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels returned from behind to get a 3-2 win against Rhodes College Sunday on senior day.

Seniors Briella Kohler (19 kills), Gabbi Phillips (46 assists) and Legacy Guider (22 digs) were honored prior to the match and came through as statistical leaders in their respective categories.

The first set of the match was hard for the Stormy Petrels. They could never get more than a few points ahead before the Lynx would catch up. Sadly, in the end Rhodes got ahead winning the set 26-24.

Oglethorpe knew that they had to start fighting harder in the second set. While most of the set was very similar to the first with the teams being evenly matched, the Stormy Petrels started pulling a little bit farther ahead near the end of the set. Oglethorpe won the set with only a two-point lead 25-23.

The third set started strong for Oglethorpe with a kill from Ashlynn Stephens. The beginning of the set played out much like the previous two with the two teams never being more than a couple points away. This set ended better for the Stormy Petrels than the ones before after they gained a 10-point lead in the end and took the set 25-15.

In set four, Rhodes kicked it into high gear, trying to take the win. The Lynx were getting ahead, and there was little Oglethorpe could do about it. The Stormy Petrels did not go down without a fight. They did all they could, but Rhodes still took it 25-22.

The fifth and final set was just as close as the preceding sets at the start. After a while the Stormy Petrels got ahead after a kill by Briella Kohler, who had 19 in this match, and Rhodes was struggling to catch up. When Oglethorpe reached match point, Rhodes fought back, scoring three points before the Stormy Petrels finally took their win 15-11.

Oglethorpe will stay home for one more match on Thursday before hitting the road again to play Sewanee and Centre this weekend.
