ATLANTA—In the final home match of the season, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels surrendered to Roanoke College in a 3-2 loss, falling in extra points 17-15 in the fifth set despite holding match point at 14-13.
The first set was a great start for the Stormy Petrels. They managed to get a good lead on the Maroons early on. With the help of Gracie Sims and her 16 kills throughout the match, the Stormy Petrels won by a large margin 25-16.
The second set was when the Maroons realized they needed to work harder. The Stormy Petrels did what they could, but it was not enough this time. While the set was close the Maroons won 25-22. This energy by Roanoke was carried into the third set and sadly they won that one too 25-18.
The fourth set put the Stormy Petrels back in the game. They knew that if they did not win this set, the Maroons would take the win, and they were not going down without a fight. They worked hard, with Gabbi Phillips getting 43 assists for the match, and they won the set 25-18 before heading to the fifth set.
The last set of the match was incredibly tight. Both teams were neck and neck for most of the set. A final kill by Briella Kohler brought the Stormy Petrels just short of their goal with the Maroons getting ahead and winning the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
Oglethorpe will head up to Tennessee to face Sewanee before continuing on to Kentucky to face Centre College this weekend.
