Oglethorpe dominates at St. Joseph's

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Oglethorpe defeated the St. Joseph's Bears 73-53, with Perry Robison hitting 21 points and eight other Stormy Petrels in the scoring column on Saturday.

Robinson also made seven rebounds, same as Mason Kemp. Malachi Dooley dropped 12 points and six rebounds, Logan Turner had 10 points, and Dylan Pumpian scored nine points and six rebounds. Kemp also put up nine points.

"We got out to a slow start but ended the first half with a good run to tie it up, and we went into the locker room with some momentum," said head coach Philip Ponder. "We played much better in the second half. Our defense locked in, and we were able to get out in transition and things really started to click."

Pumpian kicked things off with a good 3-pointer, which was quickly mirrored by the Bears. The first half was back-and-forth, with the score tying five times in the first half alone. The Bears were able to gain a decent lead late in the period, but Pumpian, Robinson and Turner went on an 8-0 run over the last two minutes to tie things up at 33-33.

St. Joseph's continued to fight back, sinking a layup right after the clock started for the second half. After eight minutes the score was tied 42-42, but this would be the Bears' last look at a win. Kemp and Turner combined for a quick 7-2 run, giving the Petrels the edge that would last the rest of the game.

A free throw from Dooley put Oglethorpe 10 points ahead, and the Petrels never looked back. Scoring slowed in the final minutes, but Kemp and Robinson made a few layups look easy. In their first ever matchup, Oglethorpe defeated St. Joseph's 73-53.

"We have a really tough game tomorrow against a quality opponent in Yeshiva," Ponder said. "Yeshiva just took down the No. 19 team in the country last weekend, so we will need to bring our A game."

Game Notes

  • LaVigne, Corey Gatlin, and Carter Watkins made their collegiate debuts.
  • Turner went 2-for-2 on 3-pointers.
