ATLANTA – Perry Robinson led a second-half surge that landed the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels an 80-76 in Saturday's home opener against the Warren Wilson Owls.
Robinson also tallied 13 rebounds and three assists for his second double-double of the season. Malachi Dooley followed with 16 points and two steals. Dylan Pumpian and Jackson Kemp posted nine points each. J. Kemp and Mason Kemp twinned with four rebounds apiece.
The Petrels trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and 10 in the second half but used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to climb back and win.
"That game was too close for comfort," said head coach Philip Ponder. "The first half obviously didn't go the way we wanted, but give Warren Wilson credit. We were getting open shots and missing, and they were getting open shots and shot the ball really well. We defended better in the second half and made them take tougher shots. It wasn't a pretty win, but I love the way we battled back from 16 down. We showed a lot of grit and energy in the second half, and just found a way to win."
The Owls were able to open the game with a 3-pointer, but Pumpian was quick to respond with one of his own. Warren Wilson still managed to gain an early lead, and the Petrels were unable to match them. Oglethorpe headed into halftime down 46-35.Â
The energy shifted in the second half, which opened with a 5-0 run from Robinson. The Owls held on to their lead for as long as they could, until a 3-pointer from Dooley put the Petrels up 63-62. Oglethorpe strengthened their lead throughout the remaining time, including a 6-2 run in the final thirty seconds. The Petrels moved to a winning record, posting an 80-76 win for their home opener.
