ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels played three matches on the road this weekend, facing some of the stiffest competition of the season. Although the weekend started with losses to No. 5 Emory and No. 14 Washington & Lee, Oglethorpe took home a win against Randolph-Macon to finish the weekend.
The high note indeed came in the final match as Oglethorpe topped Randolph-Macon in four sets. The start of the first set was strong, with the Stormy Petrels scoring the first point. As the set progressed it got closer and closer, but Oglethorpe managed a 27-25 win in the end. The second set was even better for the Stormy Petrels after they got a better head start on their opponent and won the set 25-20.
The third set was when Randolph-Macon swooped in and barely won the set 25-22. The Stormy Petrels were working hard with the leaders in kills for this match being Gracie Sims with 17, Briella Kohler with 14 and Camdyn George with 13. This allowed them to win the final set with a large margin of 25-16 and the match 3-1.
For the first match of the weekend, the Stormy Petrels faced off against No. 5 Emory, the host of the tournament. The first set of the match was the most promising with the Stormy Petrels nearly winning 25-21. However, in the end the Stormy Petrels lost all three sets despite their best efforts. They did have some highs, including Legacy Guilder with 19 digs and Briella Kohler and Gabbi Phillips with nine digs each, the leaders in this match.
Oglethorpe went up against No. 14 Washington & Lee University for the second match of the weekend. Like the one against Emory, this one pushed the Stormy Petrels. After losing the first set 25-14, the Stormy Petrels came back fighting in the second, Gabbi Philips leading in assists with 35. For the third set, the score was close, but Washington & Lee narrowly took it 25-23. They also won the final set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
Up next, Oglethorpe will head to the Southern Athletic Association tournament in Danville, Kentucky. The first match they are set to play is on Nov. 15 against Rhodes College, and a win would put the Petrels into the semifinals to face host and top-seeded Centre.
