MARYVILLE, Tenn.—Briley Elder connected on a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, part of a 4-for-4 start from the field for Oglethorpe, and the Stormy Petrels won decidedly at Maryville, 67-50, Wednesday evening on the road. Three Petrels made it to double figures, led by Keimarya Rivera with her third double-double of the year.
Elder's three gave Oglethorpe a lead it would not relinquish and was part of a 9-2 run to start the game before Maryville quickly called a timeout to slow the bleeding. Slow it, it did not, however, as Oglethorpe followed a few minutes later with a 12-2 run to end the quarter ahead 21-10.
The Oglethorpe defense was key in the opening period, and it continued to look great for the duration of the game as Oglethorpe held Maryville to less than 15 points in all four quarters.
